Vacation travel is relatively new to most Chinese citizens. Historically, the people of China were limited in their ability to travel around their own country due to financial constraints and a lack of available time away from work. To make traveling even more difficult, government red tape, endless paperwork, and associated tourism fees often discouraged all but the wealthiest Chinese from exploring China.
With the economic boom that China began experiencing at the end of the 20th century came an ease in government travel restrictions, and the Chinese tourism industry began to thrive. The citizens of China are taking advantage of the natural and cultural beauty this amazing country has to offer, and at an unprecedented rate. Annually, millions of visitors are now enjoying the rich and varied landscapes that China provides, from the spectacular national parks and storied ancient cities, to the picturesque rural areas.
